What are Cutter Suction Dredgers from ECTMarine?
Cutter suction dredgers are a versatile tool for maintenance and construction of infrastructure in and below water. The vessel in itself is nothing more than a sum of its parts, highlighting the importance of quality components. Each part of the cutter suction dredger plays a crucial role in the dredging process and everything needs to be aligned in order to engineer a CSD for a specific purpose or workload.
The main components or parts of a cutter suction dredger:
- Dredge control and monitoring
- Hydraulics
- Winches and Spunds
- Cutter
- Dredge Pumps and Drive Train

1. Dredge control and monitoring
This is a crucial component in modern dredgers, ensuring efficient, safe, and precise dredging operations. This system integrates advanced sensors, automation, and real-time data processing to optimize dredging performance. The configuration and size of this system is dependent on the requirements of the project and the client. Functions included or can be included;
Operational Control;
This is a mandatory function to control and operate the dredger. The operational control manages dredging equipment such as cutter heads, suction pipes, and dredge pumps. Regulates dredging depth, cutter speed, and suction pressure for efficiency. Controls winches and spuds for positioning and stability.
Monitoring performance;
Is not mandatory but is part of the standard configuration continuously tracks key parameters like dredge depth, pump pressure, slurry density, and flow rate. Provides real-time data on sediment removal and operational status. Detects blockages, wear, or system malfunctions.
Automation and Optimization;
Uses GPS and sonar for precise dredging location and depth control. Adjusts dredging parameters automatically for fuel efficiency and minimal environmental impact. Reduces manual intervention, increasing accuracy and safety.
Data Logging and Reporting;
Records operational data for analysis and future planning. Generates reports on dredging efficiency, fuel consumption, and maintenance needs. Assists in regulatory compliance by tracking environmental impact. A Dredge Control and Monitoring System can improved efficiency by optimizing dredging performance and reducing fuel and operational costs. It can also ensure consistent and accurate sediment removal. Any equipment failures and anomalies can be detected early and increase overall safety.
Parts;
The DTPS system consists of; sensors, operating controls, PLC or relays and display units in the control cabin. With the right sensors and setup the system can function as an environmental monitoring tool that monitors turbidity and environmental impact. Maintenance can be made predictable and spare parts can be sourced before needed so not to be confronted with unwanted downtime. A dredge track and monitoring system is a useful tool for any data driven dredge project.
ECTMarine DTPS systems
ECTMarine supplies DTPS systems tailored to the application of the client The programming of the system is done in house and the complexity of the system is determined by the environment the Cutter Suction Dredger will be working in.

2. Hydraulics
A cutter Suction dredger is a vessel that has a very large hydraulic system in place in comparison to other vessels of other types. The dredge system is controlled by the operational control system that is part of the DTPS. The hydraulic system in turn controls most functions on the dredger, such as:
- Cutter
- Winch operation (Ladder Winches & Side Winches)
- Spud operation
- Anchor booms
The hydraulic system uses one or more hydraulic pumps that are usually powered by a single dedicated engine which is called the Auxiliary engine as it exists next to the main engine that drives the dredge pump. The auxiliary engine will run at a constant rpm and the pump will be controlling the flow and power put into the hydraulic system
In smaller dredgers the pumps might be connected to the main engine as well, but this is never optimal as the main engine will change rpm’s in accordance with the optimal working of the dredge pump.
The hydraulic is an essential system for the correct operational functioning of the dredger. For both the performance and the maintenance of the dredger over its lifetime it is essential that the hydraulic system is of high quality and correct design.
ECTMarine hydraulic systems
ECTMarine designs and builds its hydraulic system in house. The design is made according to the needs of the customer. The production and build up of the hydraulic controls and blocks is done in house by our design and construction teams.
It is essential that the design of the hydraulics matches the expected performance of the complete dredger.
Our focus on inhouse design and engineering of the hydraulic system ensures the best price, performance and service in the long run.
3. Winches and Spuds
Both winches and spuds are used for moving and holding the cutter suction dredger in place while in dredging operation. The winches are operated trough the hydraulic system by hydraulic motors. The spuds can be operated by winches but generally the spuds are moved by hydraulic cylinders.
The power of the hydraulic on both winches and spuds must be calculated to match the rest of the dredging system such as cutter power, dredging depth and much more.
ECTMarine Winches and Spud systems
The spud system and winch systems are selected and designed for optimal performance price and maintainability.
4. Cutter
The cutter is the excavating tool of a Cutter Suction Dredger, it agitates, cuts and breaks free the soil to be sucked up through the suction mouth inside the cutter ladder front part. The cutterhead is powered by a hydraulic motor. In different cases an electric motor can also be used.
The Cutter can consist of the cutter head, cutter ladder front part (including side wire sheaves) and the cutter ladder.
ECTMarine Cutters
ECTMarine designs and fabricates tailored to the application of the client. The complete configuration of the front part, ladder, winches and general design of the dredger is laid out to the power and design of the cutter head.
5. Dredge Pumps and Drive Train
The pump drive train in a cutter suction dredger is a vital system that ensures the effective transport of dredged material. Its efficiency, durability, and adaptability directly impact the overall performance, fuel economy, and reliability of the dredging operation. Proper design, maintenance, and monitoring of the pump drive train are crucial for maximizing productivity and minimizing downtime in dredging projects. The Drive trains components and positioning in the dredger determine its performance.
The engine: the engine is the power source of the dredger which drives all the parts of the system. The engine should be of a rating that fits the purpose of the dredger.
The gearbox: the gearbox transfers the power to the pump in the right rpm’s. the gearbox needs to be selected so it can withstand the rough process of driving a dredge pump.
The Dredge pump: The heart of any dredger. A quality pump is a must for any dredger to perform well. The engine and gearbox must be selected in the optimal working range of the pump for the system to work properly. Additionally the pump must have a reliable and redundant supply chain for parts as the pump is a heavy wear part.
The whole drive train needs to sit in the ship in the optimal position so start up and operation can be done most effectively.
ECTMarine Dredge Pump and Drive Train design
ECTMarine designs its dredger so the drivetrain sits in the optimal position in the ship and the components are selected on quality and compatibility with the application. This way the pumping process is maximized and ECTMarine’s dredgers are of the best and most reliable dredgers in the market.
